U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Introduction.

The Department of Energy has provided this training to ensure that everyone involved in human subject research understands the rules, ethics and practices required to conduct such research. The intent of this training is to enhance the quality of human subject research and forestall any potential problems with such research conducted at DOE sites, with DOE funding, or by DOE personnel.

DOE Requirements. Top

DOE recommends that all IRB members and staff complete the required training before reviewing any human subjects activities; and that all researchers complete training before they can conduct such research.

What Modules are Required?.

The entire course consists of six basic Modules and twelve optional Modules plus related material listed below.

IRB Administrators at each site select which modules are appropriate for their site based on the type of research conducted there. Those determinations along with justification for the selections are provided to DOE SC-72

If you are unsure what training requirements apply at your site, contact your site IRB Office.

How does CITI work?   Top
The CITI program enables key personnel to complete several mandatory education modules and quizzes relevant to their research and discipline. CITI also gives key personnel the opportunity to choose additional educational modules. After completing all the required modules and quizzes, CITI will automatically send a completion certificate to the DOE Site IRB Administrator who will then record the training requirement in the individual records. Others will be required to track their own training records.

How long will it take to complete the course?
Each CITI module has text to read and a quiz to complete. The average learner spends approximately 4.5 hrs in the Basic Course site and approximately 1.5 hours if your site requires additional modules. The Refresher Training will take approximately 2 hours. Each DOE site IRB Administrator or Training Manager will work with CITI administrators to set up individual site requirements by site listing on the front page of the DOE CITI access page.

How often do I need to take human subjects education?
Key personnel listed on IRB applications are required to complete the CITI program or equivalent every three (3) years. Confirmation of educational certification will be required prior to the approval of research studies submitted to the IRB.

I already have completed other human research training modules from another resource?
Valid human subjects education certification accepted by other institutions such as NIH (National Institute of Health), will be accepted on a case by case bases, in lieu of CITI certification. Please send a copy of this certification to your IRB Administrator or Training Records Manager who will validate the acceptance of the particular training certification.
