Training Requirements for the Protection of Human,
Animal Subjects in Research

Institutional Training Requirement for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research
Investigators, including faculty, staff students, directly involved in research with human subjects are required to complete an education program in human subjects protection. Completion of required CITI training modules listed below fulfills the UMASS requirements for investigator training:

A. Review the Belmont Report.
B. Complete all the topics listed below in either the Biomedical or Social/Behavioral modules relevant to your research along with the associated quizzes for each topic:
For Biomedical Research (Group 1):

In addition, please review other modules appropriate to your area of research

For Social/Behavioral Research (Group 2):

In addition, please review other modules appropriate to your area of research


You must receive a score of 80% or better overall in order to pass this course If you receive less than 80%, you will need to retake one or more quizzes to improve your score to 80% overall.
C.After you complete all required modules you will be able to print / download a course completion report from the site
D. Please complete the optional, anonymous user satisfaction survey.

Institutional Training Requirements for the Protection of Animal Subjects used in Research
At UMass Amherst all investigators (including faculty, visiting scientists, staff students) using live vertebrate animals must complete an education program for animal users prior to starting work with animals. 
All new animal users must attend the classroom “Basic IACUC Training for UMass” provided by the Compliance Office and take the CITI online training for animal users.   Contact Barbara Miller at bsmiller@research.umass.edu to sign up for the classroom training.  CITI online training will also be used to for update training recertification for animal users, required every three years. CITI will send you a reminder when your recertification is coming due. 
The online CITI training modules for IACUC members satisfy UMass Amherst training requirements for new IACUC members.  New IACUC members must take this training whether or not they are animal users.   
CITI courses consist of a series of modules with a quiz that follows each module.

Institutional Training Requirements for the Responsible Conduct of Research
UMass Amherst, in order to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers who will be supported by NSF requires all NSF sponsored Post Docs and graduate students to complete the CITI course on RCR and receive a score of 80% or better overall in order to pass this course. If you receive less than 80% you will be prompted to retake one or more quizzes to improve your score to 80% overall.
